Vincenzo Montella has emphasised the importance of improving defensively, if his Fiorentina team are to reach their objectives this season.

Montella admitted that recent habits of conceding goals has stunted the Viola’s start to the season and has also began to pressurise his players, ahead of Wednesday’s match with Udinese.

“They [Udinese] know how to adapt to attack from defence,” Montella told the press.

“We must not make mistakes against them, tomorrow is an important opportunity for us and I expect a good performance.

“We have to show greater defensive solidity but we are also a team that attacks with courage and we will continue to do so,” he said.

Montella also confirmed that injured striker Mario Gomez will not be available for Wednesday’s game despite returning to full training after a month-long lay-off.

“I think he needs around ten days before he is ready to return to action,” Montella explained.

Montella insisted that he still harbours ambitions of reaching the Champions League, despite their disappointing start to the campaign.

Fiorentina and Udinese meet on Wednesday night at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, with Fiorentina in desperate need of a win following a disappointing start to the Serie A season. Udinese, meanwhile, will be looking to stay hot on the heels of Juventus and Roma after amassing an impressive 16 points from eight games.
