Sampdoria’s Argentine keeper Sergio Romero has spoken of his desire to win back the number one jersey after being dropped to the bench following his exploits in the recent Brazil World Cup.

Romero had been pushed out by Emiliano Viviano, but a recent knee injury to the former Italy custodian has handed the Argentina keeper an opportunity.

“I will always be grateful to [Alejandro] Sabella and what happened at the World Cup but I knew I’d come back to Italy as the twelfth man,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

“To find a new club many things had to fall into place, things which did not happen.

“Much has been said of late about my wages. I never refused going to Dinamo Moscow, Manchester United or Galatasaray because these clubs never made an approach. But I’m happy here and am determined to stay number one.”

So far Sampdoria, along with league leaders Juventus, are the only unbeaten sides in Serie A.
