Palermo midfielder Enzo Maresca was delighted with his team’s performance during their 2-0 win over AC Milan at San Siro that came thanks to a Cristian Zapata own goal before Paulo Dybala netted to secure the three points.

The 34-year-old believes the victory proves the ability of the squad to its critics and is a big step in their mission to stay in Serie A.

“We did well at San Siro, we are very happy,” said Maresca to Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“We played well, for me it was the first game this season when I’ve started from the beginning.

“I’ve missed some weeks through injury but I’ll get back to peak condition a little bit at a time.

“When you come up against great teams and you don’t play with character and courage and they pin you down in defence it can can be difficult to pick up points.

“We played really well, playing attacking football and we’ve got three deserved points.

“It was a great team effort.”

The former West Bromwich Albion and Sevilla midfielder also spoke more generally about the Rosanero’s objective of survival.

“Our squad is not to be sniffed at, we’ve never thought this.

“I believe that we can survive in a calm fashion, to stay in Serie A has to be our objective.

“We’re a newly promoted team and we’ve already dropped too many points but the season is long and we’ll look to achieve our objectives up until the end.”

The interview then concluded with Maresca being asked a question about whether club president Maurizio Zamparini will be put at ease by the win.

“I’ve known him [Zamparini] for 20 years, he’s the calm type.”
