The Neroverdi and the Orobici went into the match in need of important three points, but poor offensive displays from both teams left them in dangerous proximity to the relegation zone.
After quiet first 10 minutes to a half that was marked by 17 fouls, Atalanta’s Daniele Baselli had an opportunity to threaten Andrea Consigli’s goal from a free kick at the edge of the penalty area, but blasted his shot over the crossbar.
The Neroverdi’s first chance of the match came 10 minutes later on a counter attack following an Orobici corner. Nicola Sansone found Domenico Berardi deep into the visitors’ half with a long ball, but the forward’s shot was blocked by a defender.
The best chance for either team in the opening half went to Sassuolo in the last minute before the break. Simone Zaza passed the ball to Berardi in the penalty area, the 20-year old volleyed it on his first touch, but Marco Sportiello saved.
Sansone had a good chance to put Sassuolo on the scoreboard, but his diving header off Berardi’s cross from the right went high. Moments later Berardi himself tried his luck on goal, but again failed to beat Sportiello, who saved comfortably.
Right before the one-hour mark, Salvatore Molina from the Orobici tried his luck with a curling shot from 18 yards out, but it was too strong and could not find the target.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, Cristian Raimondi soared over Federico Peluso in Sassuolo’s penalty area and got his head on a cross from the left. His shot beat Consigli for the first time in the match, but the 27-year old goalkeeper was saved by his left-hand post.
Atthe other end, the Neroverdi responded through substitute Sergio Floccari putting a shot on goal, but failing to threaten Sportiello seriously.
The visitors were the more active team for the latter part of the match as thety went in search of the win, but didn’t create a clear opportunity in front of the Neroverdi goal.
