The eye-catching fixture in week 16 of the Serie B season was certainly Carpi v Frosinone, the top two in the league.

Last time out, the league leaders Carpi drew 3-3 at Brescia despite having nine-men, whereas Frosinone smashed Livorno 5-1.

The game failed to live up to expectations though with the game ending in a scoreless draw.

Despite Carpi being favourites, the Gialloazzurri were certainly the better team, controlling the possession and having the majority of shots on goal.

The Biancorossi saw themselves get another red card as ten minutes from time Maodo Mbaye received his second yellow of the game, but the away side could not capitalise on the man advantage and the game ended 0-0.

Although that game disappointed, the match between Trapani and Spezia indefinitely exceeded expectations with the home side winning 3-2 in what was a late show.

Spezia who were in third place before a ball was kicked, took the lead in the 68th minute as Andrea Catellani converted a spot kick.

Then Trapani, lurking in the play-off positions, equalised in the 84th minute through Antonino Barilla and then amazingly turned the game on its head in the 87th minute when Enis Nadarevic scored.

In the third minute of injury time the away side got themselves on level terms as Josip Brezovec dramatically scored.

Just as the Aquilotti thought they’d earned themselves a point, the hosts were awarded a penalty. Christian Terlizzi stepped up and smashed home to give his side the three points.

Elsewhere Pablo Granoche was on form as he netted all four of his side’s goals in Modena’s 4-1 away win at bottom of the table Crotone.

The Uruguayan forward opened the scoring in the 35th minute and then got his second at the start of the second half to give the Gialloblu a 2-0 lead.

Then, Crotone were reduced to ten men as Pietro De Giorgio was dismissed but minutes later pulled one back when Camilo Ciano converted from the penalty spot to give the Rossoblu a glimmer of hope.

Granoche notched his hat-trick ten minutes from time and then added his fourth in injury time to surely earn himself in the team of the week.

Vicenza came out on top in an exciting match against Varese which ended 3-2.

Defender Martino Borghese opened the scoring for Varese in the 13th minute but Stefano Giacomelli put Vicenza level minutes later.

It took quite a while for another goal but it came in the 80th minute through Andrea Cocco to put Vicenza 2-1 up. Moments later the Biancorossi made it 3-1 as Lorenzo Lavarone scored.

Varese pulled one back in the 89th minute through Neto Pereira but it wasn’t enough for the Leopardi.

In other matches Brescia failed to win against a team that were reduced to nine men for the second consecutive week as they drew 1-1 with Cittadella.

In the 18th minute, Michele Pelizzer was shown a straight red card and the Leonessa was awarded a penalty which was converted by Andrea Caracciolo, who scored three penalties last week.

Minutes later, the ten men equalised through Claudio Coralli to shock the away side.

Later in the first half, Citta were further reduced to nine men as Alessio Benedetti received his second yellow card of the match.

The away side could not get the goal that they needed though and the game ended level.

Elsewhere, Ternana beat ten man Catania 1-0 at the Stadio Libero Liberati and Latina drew 1-1 with Pro Vercelli.

Catania saw themselves a man lighter in the 55th minute as Sebastian Leto got his second yellow card and then minutes later, young Uruguayan striker Felipe Avenatti scored the all important goal for Fere.

After a goal-less first half, Pro Vercelli took the lead through Giacomo Beretta, but the hosts were level in the 69th minute when Michele Paolucci scored.

There were also two more 0-0 draws in the games between Virtus Entella and Avellino and Livorno and Perugia.
