Roma are the latest club to be linked with a move for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar as the Dutchman’s contract is set to expire in June.

The 29-year-old has been watched by Roma’s hierarchy as the Giallorossi are in the market for a defender following the continued absence of Leandro Castan following successful surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Sportitalia report that the highly rated Dutch central defender could move to Roma, before stating the move could be difficult to conclude as English giants Manchester United are also keen on a January transfer.

Rudi Garcia’s side have also been linked with a move for Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson. The former Chelsea man is equally comfortable playing on either the right or the left side of defence.

His signing could signal an end to Ashley Cole’s career at the capital club, as the former Chelsea and Arsenal fullback has struggled to secure a place in Garcia’s first team.
