Parma midfielder Francesco Lodi was positive about his sides chances of escaping relegation after their 1-0 victory at home to Fiorentina.

The Catania loanee’s corner kick was flicked into the path of the unmarked Andrea Costa to nod in and secure the Gialloblu a perfect start to 2015, having gone six matches without a win.

“This New Year has started in a special way,” Lodi told Sky Sport Italia.

“The spirit we showed today is precisely the kind we need to continue to show if we are to continue to climb to safety.

“It will not be easy but if we show the same effort and commitment on the pitch from now until the end of the season, we can stay in this division.”

It was the ninth league match in a row where Antonio Cassano has failed to score, but Lodi was quick to praise the mercurial talent for his work ethic.

“Cassano made a great contribution to our cause, even in defence,” the 30-year-old said.

“Watching him, you want to fight even more.

“Even in the last minute he was able to chase down [Stefan] Savic and cause the defender to see red.”
