AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo believes that the Diavolo have what it takes to secure third place and admits that the ultimate goal for the season is to win the Coppa Italia.

The Rossoneri currently sit in eighth place in the Serie A standings with 26 points, leaving them five points behind third place Lazio, and the 29-year-old is confident that his team can perform better this season as long as they continue to work on their weaknesses and show as much team spirit as possible.

Montolivo spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about AC Milan’s objectives for the campaign and the club’s current market situation, while also commenting on the rivalry with Inter and former team-mate Mario Balotelli’s tough time at Liverpool.

“We deserve our current ranking, but with a little team spirit from everyone we can be able to compete with every other team,” said the Italian international.

“The market? All great players are welcome, but first we must think about working on our weakest areas.

“Inter? Their new signings do not frighten us, they don’t even scare us in general as a team.

“Pippo Inzaghi? He reminds me of Cesare Prandelli during his time at Fiorentina, he has great authority over the team.

“Our objectives? This season our main objective is to win the Coppa Italia. It would be great motivation to lift a trophy.

“In 2015 I expect us to be fierce and fully dedicate ourselves to doing well. We have the right values to earn third place.

“Balotelli? He’s a good guy, I feel sorry that his talent cannot be admired every Sunday. He must get his priorities in order.”
