The agent of the Lazio midfielder Ederson has hit back at his client’s detractors, after the 29-year-old’s refusal to join Sampdoria in an exchange deal caused a deadline-day move for striker Gonzalo Bergessio to collapse.

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare claimed that the deal broke down after Ederson refused to respond to Lazio or Sampdoria representatives on deadline day, despite being aware that talks were underway.

But the player’s agent Antonio Caliendo said his client should have been given more time to make a decision.

“Above all else Ederson is not a parcel that you can send off at a moment’s notice,” said Caliendo to TuttoMercatoWeb.com.

“They should have prepared for this deal at least two days earlier, so that the boy could have gotten some idea about his possible destination, for family reasons and so he could make a decision about the whole thing.”

“Ederson was flattered at the interest from Sampdoria who are an important club and he didn’t want to offend anybody, it was only a matter of timing.”

Ederson has made two substitute appearances for the Biancocelesti during the 2014-15 Serie A season and scored one goal.
