Cannavaro - SassuoloSassuolo defender Paolo Cannavaro has revealed that it’s still difficult for him to play against former club Napoli due to his history there.

The 33-year-old Naples native has spent the larger part of his footballing career with the Partenopei, making his exit from the club in January 2014 to join the Neroverdi, and he admits that he’ll always have fond memories of the Neapolitan side despite the problems he experienced toward the end of his time at the club.

Cannavaro spoke to Domenica Sportiva about his departure from Napoli and the things he left behind when he joined Sassuolo, while also reflecting on the happiness he felt at the San Paolo outfit.

“When I was at Napoli many people had turned their noses up at me while watching me play, along with Gianluca Grava and Salvatore Aronica,” said the centre back, who will be facing the Azzurri with Sassuolo on February 23.

“And yet we always brought home great results. I had to leave the club because my situation had started to change.

“Everyone is familiar with my story, it’s difficult to play against Napoli because I left so many great people and things there. I admit that it hurts to play against them, in a sense.”
