Hellas Verona lost 3-1 at home to Torino at the Stadio Bentegodi in Serie A on Saturday evening.

Torino went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Josef Martinez and Fabio Quagliarella before Luca Toni gave the Gialloblu hope of a draw late on only for Omar El Kaddouri to add a third.

Hellas Verona

Francesco Benussi – 6 – Unfortunate

Made the simple saves that you would expect him to make and was unable to do anything to prevent the Verona goals.

Eros Pisano – 6 – Average

Looked determined to make an impact on his debut by marauding down the right flank but struggled to create much and was eventually replaced in the 72nd minute.

Rafael Marquez – 5 – Disappointing

Overly pensive in possession, arguably the chief culprit for the first goal after not taking the opportunity to clear the ball. Rash challenge on Martinez to give away the penalty for Torino’s second.

Javier Saviola – 5 – Anonymous

Ran down blind alleys when in possession. Wasn’t direct enough in a game that was scrappy and didn’t suit his more technical style. Wasted a great chance with a weak shot in the second half  that was easily saved.

Luca Toni – 6.5 – Fighter

Typically physical performance from the striker, tested Torino’s defence but didn’t quite get the chances he needed but when one came to him late in the second half he made no mistake to give his side hopes of a draw.

Emil Hallfredsson – 6 – Mixed

Got the ball into some important areas but couldn’t find the killer pass. Posed a mild threat with long shots. Seemed to tire as the game went on and lost the ball sloppily a few times in the second half before coming off after 72 minutes.

Evangelos Moras – 6 – Promising

Looked more determined as part of a back three. Put in some good tackles to win the ball higher up the pitch and start counterattacks. Put in arguably the best performance in a back line that was shaky throughout.

Leandro Greco – 5.5 – Drifter

Tidy on the ball but had a tendency to drift out to the right which limited the space available to the right-back Pisano. Didn’t really feature in the midfield battles that defined the fixture.

Rafael Marques – 5.5 – Unwieldy

Slow in possession and at time his desire to press the ball carrier at times left space open for the Torino attack.

Alessandro Agostini – 6 – Threat

Made some impressive runs going forward but looked a bit off the pace when Torino ran down the right flank.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis – 6.5 – Determined

Made some energetic and driving runs but a lack of precision somewhat undermined their effectiveness.  Displayed quick-thinking from a throw-in that almost set Hallfredsson up before the Icelander was brought down. Lost some sharpness as the game went on but displayed an admirable desire to keep going and he looked the mostly likely Verona player to make something happen.

Substitutes

Juanito Gomez – 5.5 – Smart

Made intelligent runs that opened up space for Toni but wasn’t able to get on the ball and effect the game himself.

Lazaros Christodoulopoulos – 5 – Isolated

Lurked dangerously down the right had little real impact.

Fernandinho – 5 – Impact-less

Made some simple passes but seemed to lack chemistry with new team-mates.  Won an important corner at the end that Toni almost scored from.
