Inter forward Mauro Icardi stated that his side deserved their 2-1 victory against Cagliari on Monday night at the Stadio Sant’Elia.

The 22-year-old – who scored his side’s second goal of the night –  stated that coach Roberto Mancini’s game plan is benefitting the side despite enduring a bad run at the beginning of his tenure in November.

“With Mancini we changed our formation and the way we play,” he said. “At first it was hard to understand why things didn’t go our way, but now we’re improving.

“The victory against Cagliari was deserved; in the first half we created so much and the ball would not go in, but in the second we were able to find the net.”

The match saw Mateo Kovacic make his return to the starting line-up for the first time since the 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo in early February, and Icardi stated that the whole team is happy that the Croatian got his name on the scoresheet on Monday.

“Mateo was disappointed with his time on the bench, but he’s scored and we are happy for him,” he continued.

“[Xherdan] Shaqiri is also doing well.”

The Argentine concluded his words by saying that he does not know anything about a possible extension to his contract which ends in 2018, saying that only Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio knows.

“I do not know anything, ask Ausilio,” he continued. “He knows these things.”
