Walter Mazzarri has rejected the chance to become the new coach of the Japanese national team after being approached by Roma and Fiorentina.

The 53-year-old, who was sacked by Inter in November, follows former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli and ex-AC Milan boss Leonardo in turning down the opportunity to replace Javier Aguirre in the Japan hotseat, a role once held by another former Inter coach; Alberto Zaccheroni.

According to Tuttosport, Mazzarri turned down the offer after holding informal talks with both Fiorentina and Roma in the past few weeks regarding becoming their new coach in the summer.

The Giallorossi’s title challenge has faded since the winter break with a seven point gap to leaders Juventus leading to some criticism of Rudi Garcia’s tenure.

The Viola on the other hand are said to be exploring potential replacements for Vincenzo Montella who has been touted as a possible successor to Filippo Inzaghi at AC Milan, and the Tuscan coach looks to be high on Fiorentina’s list.

Mazzarri, who guided Napoli to the Coppa Italia in 2012, is still officially under contract at Inter until June 2016 on a €3.5 million per year deal.
