Sampdoria captain Angelo Palombo has revealed that it was impossible for the Blucerchiati’s match against Genoa to be played as conditions at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris were too severe.

The Derby della Lanterna was postponed after heavy rainfall waterlogged the pitch forcing the highly anticipated match to be postponed, though Palombo believes there was no other option.

“The only thing we are sorry for is our fans as they had prepared a lot of things for today,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“But it was not up to us, the pitch did not allow us to play and it was too much of a risk.

“A few fans wanted us to play but we explained that it wasn’t possible to do so. We didn’t expect this much rain even if it is true that, like other places, the pitch isn’t the best and it has deteriorated in recent years.

“We hope the derby can be played on an agreed upon date.”

Palombo also took time to play down any issues with Samuel Eto’o, as the Cameroonian was not included in the starting lineup or bench.

“He had a muscular issue and the coach decided to keep him out. There is no problem and there never was one.

“He is a star and he will give us a hand.”
