final ruling of the 2006 Calciopoli scandal as a “joke” after his suspended prison sentence for two years and four months over attempting to influence the choice of referees was written off.

Moggi was not acquitted from this accusation, but will not serve any jail-time as it was ruled that the initial sentence had gone beyond the statute of limitations.

“[The trial] has been carried out in an abnormal way,” the 77-year-old is reported to have said by La Gazzetta dello Sport after the reading of the verdict in the Court of Appeal.

“We have joked about for nine years, this is a regrettable thing and it has all been worked out for nothing.

“In nine years it was determined that the league was regular, the assignment of referees was regular and that there were no communications.”

Former referee Massimo De Santis also criticised the trial process after the Court of Appeal decided to uphold his sentence.

“[The Calciopoli trail] has been flawed from the outset,” De Santis said.

“I feel a great sense of disappointment and would not wish this kind of justice to happen to anyone.

“It seems to me that there has been discrimination against me.”
