Moggi cleared of two counts of sporting fraud in final Calciopoli verdict

The final verdict of the 2006 Calciopoli scandal saw former Juventus general director Luciano Moggi cleared of two sporting frauds.

The match-fixing scandal, which broke out in 2006, saw Juventus stripped of the 2004/05 and 2005/06 Serie A titles in addition to being demoted to Serie B, with both AC Milan and Fiorentina receiving eight and 15 point deductions.

The 77-year-old had received a life ban from football and sentenced to two years and four months in prison for his involvement in the scandal, though the sentence was suspended.

Now, the Supreme Court’s verdict cleared Moggi of two accusations of sporting fraud,  as well as being cleared of conspiracy to commit a crime alongside former Juventus sporting director Antonio Giraudo, as the claim went beyond the statute of limitations.

The public prosecutor’s request to clear charges against former referees Paolo Bertini, Antonio Dattilo, and Gennaro Mazzei was accepted, whilst Massimo De Santis and Savaltore Racabulto’s appeals were rejected.

It was also concluded that there was a system in place aimed at altering the results of Serie A.
