Vertonghen - TottenhamNapoli are preparing a summer transfer bid for Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen after the Partenopei hierarchy identified the Belgium international as the man to lead a defensive overhaul at the Stadio San Paolo.

Napoli have struggled at the back this term with Rafa Benitez’s men having conceded 36 goals in 28 league matches, 22 more than league leaders Juventus.

The London Evening Standard reports that Vertonghen is viewed as the man to tighten up the Neapolitan back line and that president Aurelio De Laurentiis will sanction a transfer in June, regardless of whether Benitez remains in charge for next season.

Despite being an important player at White Hart Lane, the North Londoners many be tempted to sell the 27-year-old after he announced that he would leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2018.
