Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio has said that the final ruling on the Calciopoli scandal has vindicated the outcome of the sporting trial into the case.

Nearly nine years after Italy’s biggest football scandal, the investigation was closed on Monday with the court stating that convictions against former Juventus executives Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo had gone over the statute of limitations, while acknowledging the existence of a system to commit fraud.

“We are waiting for the explanation of the ruling, but the decision confirms the position of sporting justice – aside from the expiry of the statutes of limitations,” said Tavecchio to Italian news agenct ANSA.

“Crime were committed, there was criminal association too”

Meanwhile many Juventus fans have questioned the dropping of jail terms for Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo.

The lengthy legal trial, lasting almost a decade saw Juventus stripped of two Serie A titles and face an enforced relegation to Serie B.

The Turin giants have never accepted the ruling and are mulling over a bid to request damages of €444 million in lost income and brand damage caused by being relegated as a consequence of the scandal.

“As far as we’re concerned, Juventus’s demand for a compensation from the tribunal makes for a frivolous dispute,” said Tavecchio.
