Danilo Avelar spoke after the 3-1 home loss to Lazio on Saturday afternoon in Serie A, insisting Cagliari still believe in survival.

Despite Marco Sau’s goal, Cagliari quickly conceded a penalty to Lazio 10 minutes after and then were reduced to 10 men following Modibo Diakite’s sending off.

Mired in a relegation dog-fight since the start of the season, Avelar maintained that Cagliari still harbor hopes to turn things around.

“We tried and we even managed to score,” read Cagliari’s official website of Avelar’s post-match comments.

“There are nine games left and 27 points up for grabs.

“We are not afraid; we get on the pitch with the conviction to do well, but sometimes in football it either goes right or it all goes wrong [like today].

“Lazio are a strong team and we performed well against them.

“We hope to turn things around soon; we first have to focus on ourselves before looking at others.”
