Rafael Benitez NapoliNapoli coach Rafael Benitez has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Partenopei boss, who will now have one game left against Lazio on May 31 before he leaves, joined the club in 2013, and won the Coppa Italia in his first season, but failed to pick up any more trophies and the club were knocked out of the Europa League semi-finals, after losing in the Champions League play-off rounds.

“I want to thank the president, the club and the fans,” the 55-year-old said in a press conference.

“I have a two year contract with Napoli which will end this Sunday.

“I want to say goodbye to the club with a victory and by securing qualification to the Champions League.”

Benitez also gave reasons for his departure, saying that his family was the main reason, and also that he and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis did their best for him to stay at the club.

“The primary reason is the distance from my family. I talked to my wife a few weeks ago and tried to convince her, but then I told Aurelio that it would not be easy.

“We made every effort for a contract renewal.”
