Juventus sporting director Giuseppe Marotta has revealed that some fans spit and threw eggs at Massimiliano Allegri when he was first appointed as head coach in July 2014.

Allegri – who led the club to their fourth successive Scudetto with a 1-0 win at Sampdoria on Saturday – was relieved of his duties as AC Milan boss only six months before being appointed in Turin, and Marotta stated that the board knew what they were doing when they appointed him to replace previous boss Antonio Conte.

“I remember I was in the car with Allegri one time, fans were livid and they started spitting and throwing eggs at the car,” Marotta told Stadio Sprint. “It is proof that we knew what we were doing in spite of making a choice that was not popular with the fans.”

Juve’s sporting director also went on to say that the club are not considering the sale of in-demand French midfielder Paul Pogba.

“Pogba? Juventus rarely sell because we’re champions, and in recent years we raised the level of the group because we wanted to be more competitive in Europe,” he started.

“We are already in the semi-final [of the Champions League], but we want to do even more.

“Pogba is a champion like many others in the team, which is why he is subject to a lot of interest.”
