Palermo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino claims the Sicilians were fortunate in their 1-0 victory over Caglairi, and spoke of his empathy for the Rossoblu who will play in Serie B next season.

Franco Vazquez’s first half goal was enough to see Palermo claim a win at the Stadio Sant’Elia, a result which mathematically relegates the hosts Cagliari.

“It’s been an unfortunate year for Caglairi,” Sorrentino said.

“It happened to us a few years ago so I am sorry to see them go down. I remember when my dad played there an I lived in the city.

When questioned on whether he had ever been close to playing for the Sardinians, the 36-year-old admitted that he was once on the verge of joining.

“I was close to joining in the winter transfer window a few years ago. At the time I played in Greece, but then Caglairi found someone else and it all fell through.

Comparing this result to the last, Sorrentino believes a bit of luck was involved in his side’s win.

“Last week we played against Atalanta and today Cagliari. The difference between these two games is luck.

“Against Atalanta we played well but missed a penalty, and today we managed to win despite being put under a lot of pressure.”
