Arturo Vidal has apologised after he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing his Ferrari in his native Chile where he is currently on international duty at the Copa America.

The Juventus midfielder was driving home from a casino with his wife in the capital of Santiago early on Wednesday morning when he lost control, veered off the road and destroyed his Italian sports car. He is now under investigation by the Chilean police after failing a breathalyzer test, while a judge has suspended his driving licence for 120 days.

“Yesterday I went to the casino,” Vidal explained to a press conference, “I had two drinks and I caused an accident in which, as everyone knows, I have put at risk the lives of my wife and many other people.”

“I am very sorry for this and I want to thank the people who supported me in all these hours I have spent with the police.

“I want to apologize to my teammates, the technical staff and the whole country. It hurts me a lot to talk about it, but I want to prove that possibly this has happened to me for a reason.

“I’m sorry, I have let everyone down and I want to give my best to win. I’m sorry.”

Chile’s next match takes place on Friday when they will face Bolivia.
