Fabio Cannavaro has been replaced as Guangzhou Evergrande boss by Brazil World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, the club has confirmed.

The 41-year-old former Italian international captain had been in charge of the Chinese giants since November last year after taking over from Marcello Lippi.

Evergrande sit top of the table on goal difference following a 2-2 draw with Tianjin Teda this week, but Cannavaro confirmed that a mutual decision was made to leave the club.

“I announce that earlier today I have reached an agreement for the consensual resolution of the contract with Guangzhou Evergrande,” Cannavaro said on his Twitter account.

Evergrande wasted little time in announcing his replacement, confirming Scolari only hours after Cannavaro released his statement regarding his departure.

“According to the club’s strategic development needs, it was decided to appoint Mr Scolari as Coach of Guangzhou”, a  statement read on the official club website.

“The club once again expresses its heartfelt thanks to the hard work of Mr Cannavaro.”
