Police have carried out seven arrest warrants against a number of leading figures at Catania amid accusations of sporting fraud and match-fixing.

The Anti-Mafia District Directorate (DDA) is coordinating an investigation after claims that the Sicilian side bought matches during the 2014-15 Serie B season in order to avoid relegation.

La Sicilia reports that among those arrested are club president Antonino Pulvirenti, his deputy Pablo Cosentino and former sporting director Daniele Delli Carri.

The other four arrest warrants issued by the investigating judge in Catania on the request of the DDA are for two agents and online gambling operators.

The General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS) and Postal and Telecommunications Police are working in collaboration with the DDA, while searches are being carried out in Rome, Chieti, Campobasso and Catania.

Further details of the operation named “I treni del gol” will be announced by the Catania Disrict Attorney in a press conference later on Tuesday.
