Denmark progressed from Group A of the European Under-21 Championship as winners on Tuesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Serbia in Prague.

Goals from Rasmus Falk and Viktor Fischer either side of half time secured the victory for De Rød-Hvide and saw them leapfrog Germany into top spot after Die Mannschaft could only manage a draw against the Czech Republic.

The Serbians headed into the last match of Group A knowing that anything other than a win would guarantee their exit, while a draw may have been enough for their Scandinavian opponents depending upon results elsewhere.

Both sides appeared evenly matched in the opening stages as they tried to get the ball down on the floor and play a passing game, but it was the Danes who opened the scoring in the 20th minute.

Intricate play down the left hand side resulted in a perfect cross into the box from Riza Durmisi. As the Serbian defenders were drawn to the ball, Falk moved into the area unmarked and was left with a simple tap in.

Serbia rallied to try and get back into the match before the break with Milos Jojic and Filip Djuricic looking particularly dangerous, but it was Denmark who came closest, Durmisi hitting the post with a free kick.

Denmark doubled their lead immediately after half time when Fischer brought a high Pierre Højbjerg free kick down at the back post before poking it past Marko Dmitrovic.

The Serbs laboured to create chances of their own, but they lacked the ruthlessness of their Nordic adversaries, even when they began to increase the tempo and throw everyone forward.

The Danes, for their own part looked pretty solid defensively as they sat deep, stifled their opponents offense and then hit them on the counter attack.

They almost punished the Serbian back line on a number of occasions as they slipped runners in behind, however, they were ultimately unable to add to their two goal advantage.
