Sarri - EmpoliThe search for Rafael Benitez’s successor at Napoli appears to be over with former Empoli coach Maurizio Sarri poised to take over at the helm in Naples.

Sarri has had a great debut season coaching in Serie A as he led Empoli to 14th in the table and forged a reputation as being a great tactician, though left the club following the conclusion of the Italian season.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is said to be a huge fan of the 56-year-old, and Gazzetta.it are reporting that the two parties met in Rome to finalise the deal, although as he left the Filmauro offices Sarri refused to comment to waiting reporters.

Sarri would represent a surprising choice by De Laurentiis, compared to the high-profile Benitez, as up until this season he had only ever coached in the lower leagues.

With Napoli looking to cut back on their spending, after the outlay of the last couple of seasons, the plan is to improve the performances of the younger players, which Sarri has proved to be an expert at in his time at Empoli, bringing in players like Daniele Croce, Daniele Rugani and Simone Verdi.
