Arrigo Sacchi After refusing to comment on problems surrounding AC Milan’s pre-season rebuilding, former coach Arrigo Sacchi has insisted that his close relationship with the Rossoneri hierarchy means it is difficult to express his true feelings.

Milan have saw moves for Jackson Martinez and Geoffrey Kondogbia fall through, seemingly with them expected to be pulling on Milan shirts next season, while some have questioned the €20m signing of Andrea Bertolacci from Roma.

“I am too friendly with [president Silvio] Berlusconi and [vice-president Adriano] Galliani to say what I think about the transfer activity of Milan,” Sacchi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

With former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic another reported big-name target for Milan the 69-year-old questioned the intelligence of such a move, suggesting he can upset team balance.

“Ibrahimovic is a great,” admitted Sacchi. “If football was an individual sport I believe he would be even better than [Lionel] Messi.

“This is something of great value, but also a limitation if they fail then to take advantage of their talent within the team.

“After all I had in my teams [Marco] van Basten and [George] Weah. George certainly had more technical potential but van Basten was perfectly connected to the team and this multiplied his capacity and gave meaning to our game.

“We always talk about football as if it were an individual sport, unfortunately for us it is not and so you should be able to understand that what matters is the midfield.

“The midfield is the part of the game that is not so much about the ability of the individuals but it is where ideas and hard work bring results.”
