Fiorentina legend Gabriel Batistuta has admitted he will undergo prosthetic surgery on his ankles, as a career riddled with injury has taken its toll.

The Argentine was one of the most prolific strikers in Serie A during the 1990s and early 2000s, scoring an incredible 168 goals for the Viola before firing Roma to the Scudetto in 2001.

However, since retiring in 2005 the man affectionately nicknamed ‘Batigol’ has suffered from excruciating pain in his ankles.

Speaking to Reconquistahoy, Batistuta confirmed that he was awaiting surgery for a prosthesis.

“Now I have no cartilage in my ankles and am looking forward to prosthesis. My doctor expects to have some convincing results. We will wait and see.”

Batistuta, Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer with 56 goals, spent 12 years in Italy. Having played for Fiorentina and Roma, he ended his spell in Serie A on loan at Inter before moving to Qatar.
