Genoa have rewarded coach Gian Piero Gasperini for a successful season by renewing his contract until June 2017.

Gasperini led the Grifone to sixth in Serie A, the club’s best league position since a fifth place finish in the 2008/09 season during the 57-year-olds first spell in charge.

The club’s official website confirmed the former Inter boss agreed to another year  on to his current deal with the option of a further extension until 2018.

“I’m very happy,” said Gasperini.

“It is destiny that Genoa is in my life and it is my intention to improve on the work we have done so far to remain competitive next season.

“We will have new objectives but we’ll need to show the same enthusiasm as we did towards the end of the season.”

Genoa raked up seven wins in their last ten fixtures to finish sixth and qualify for Europe ahead of city rivals Sampdoria and both Milan clubs.

The Rossoblu though have been denied a UEFA licence and, as a result, the Grifone’s place in the Europa League will go to Sampdoria.
