Martin Skrtel’s agent has revealed that the defender had the chance to join Inter following negotiations, however the Slovakian opted to stay at Anfield.

The 30-year-old is contracted until 2016 and recently turned down a new contract extension but looks set to sign an improved deal that will end any interest in the defender from Italy, with Napoli also reportedly keen on his services.

“I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto told FCInterNews.it.

“But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool.

“As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].”

Csonto refused to be drawn into making a comment about another of his clients, Legia Warsaw’s Ondrej Duda, who has also been linked with a move to Inter.

“I would rather not speak about this right now [whether negotiations have finished or not].”
