Luciano Spalletti is among the candidates linked with the coaching vacancy at Fiorentina, after the club announced the sacking of former coach Vincenzo Montella on Monday.
In a statement the Viola confirmed the former Roma striker’s dismissal and accused him of a lack of respect to the club despite Montella guiding Fiorentina to three consecutive fourth place finishes in Serie A as well as the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.
According to Il Corriere Fiorentino, Spalletti is now a leading candidate to succeed Montella despite concerns it will be too difficult for the club to attract the former Zenit St Petersburg coach.
Portuguese Paolo Sousa is also among the potential successors to Montella with Torino’s Giampiero Ventura and Parma’s Roberto Donadoni also linked with the vacancy.
Fiorentina will be assisted in any pursuit of Spalletti, who was born in Florence, by the club’s sponsors as they swiftly try to prepare ahead of the new season amid instability caused by Montella’s shock dismissal.
