Sarri - EmpoliRecently departed Empoli coach Maurizio Sarri is being targeted for the coaching job at Napoli, as attempts to land a bigger name falter.

Rafa Benitez left the Neapolitan outfit at the end of the season following two years in charge to open up the vacant position at the Stadio San Paolo, while Sarri recently brought three blissful years in Tuscany to a halt in the hope of finding a new challenge.

According to Sport Italia, the 56-year-old Naples native is on the shortlist at various clubs including relegated Cagliari, who would like to bounce straight back to Serie A at the first attempt, alongside the concrete interest from his hometown club.

In particular, Sarri’s ability to nurture young players and introduce them into the first-team squad at Empoli has helped his reputation to rise significantly over recent years.

Though Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is an admirer, he is not yet absolutely convinced that Sarri would be the right man for the job, with a whole host of internationally renowned names also being linked to the post.

However, with possible alternative Unai Emery opting to stay at Sevilla and ex-Sampdoria boss Sinisa Mihajlovic set for AC Milan, it could yet leave the way open for the ex-Sorrento man to take the reins.
