Marco Parolo - ItalyItaly midfielder Marco Parolo feels that Croatia’s opening goal in Italy’s 1-1 draw was unfairly given and could have been prevented, though preferred to give a positive outlook on the game.

Two first half goals saw the game finish all square, though an initial goal by Stephan El Shaarawy was ruled out, leading to a fast break while the Italian players were unaware and eventually resulted in the opening goal for the home side, something which the Azzurri midfielder blasts as unfair.

“It was a complete surprise [that the goal was conceded],” Parolo said in an interview to Rai Sport.

“It was a goal that could have been completely avoided had the referee actually stopped play fairly.

“However from the way we played you can see progress. We did very well to keep possession and handle the game.

“The game started at a disadvantage for us but we managed to show great spirit and fight back, in the end it was a positive result.

Parolo then wished team mate Lorenzo De Silvestri well, after the defender was forced off with what looked to be a nasty knee injury.

“I noticed something went wrong, but we hope nothing is bad. I really hope nothing serious has happened to him.

Concluding, the 30-year-old touched on what can be considered an unfortunate and bizarre incident, where the outlines of a swastika were seen to be engraved on the pitch.

“As we were busy playing the game we couldn’t really see it,” He announced.

“I’m sorry and it’s really a shame if there was one, but it was very hard to see from where we [the players] were standing. Though honestly from our perspective you could tell the field was a bit damaged, and in any case it’s a horrible thing.”
