Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani has accidentally confused Jamaica as being a country from Africa when discussing his country’s opening fixture in the Copa America against the Caribbean team.

Jamaica will star as guests alongside Mexico in the 44th edition of the tournament and will play their first match against Uruguay, though when addressing his opponents, he managed to mistake them as a country from the continent across the other side of the world.

“Every single match [within the competition] is very difficult, especially when dealing with an African team whose physical standards are extremely high and one of the team’s best virtues,” Cavani said.

The 28-year-old immediately took to twitter to excuse his error, and insisted that he had no bad intentions in the statement.

“I want to apologize to the Jamaican people,” he wrote.

“In my mind I made a comparison between the playing styles and the similar characteristics between Jamaica and African teams.

“But the truth is I didn’t manage to say what I wanted, and in turn it has been perceived wrongly. I apologize and I hope that this can be taken as a joke and not offensively.”

Uruguay stand as current champions for the tournament, and will play against islanders Jamaica on Saturday.
