Roma are back in pole position in the race to sign midfielder Radja Nainggolan from Cagliari after the two held constructive talks on Wednesday evening.

The player is still partly-owned by both clubs and each is anxious to resolve the Belgian’s future before June 25, when all outstanding co-ownership deals must be resolved or the prospect of blind auctions through envelopes – something neither side is keen on as the agreed upon fee must be paid within three days.

Sky Sport Italia report that Roma and Cagliari were pleased with the progression of their talks on Wednesday with Rudi Garcia’s interview singing Nainggolan’s praises evidence of their eagerness to secure his signature on a permanent basis.

The Lupi are understood to have offered the Sardinian side, now relegated to Serie B, €16 million plus attacker Daniele Verde but Cagliari refused this deal and are believed to be holding out for €20m.

However, both parties emerged from the meeting pleased with how the discussions are going.
