River Plate have completed the signing of Hellas Verona striker Javier Saviola, allowing the diminutive Argentine to return to the club with which he first made a name for himself from 1998 to 2001.

The move ends the 33-year-old’s time in Italy after only one season with the Mastini in which he collected one goal in 15 appearances.

Tuttomercatoweb.com reports that the striker has already signed a contract that will see him return to his first professional club after a positive meeting with River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo on June 20.

Saviola debuted for Los Millonarios in 1998 at the age of 16, before being named South American Footballer of the Year in 1999.

His performances earned him a move to Barcelona before going on to play for Monaco, Sevilla, Real Madrid, Benfica, Malaga and Olympiacos.
