Denmark U21 coach Jess Thorup was satisfied after a positive second half performance secured a 2-1 victory over hosts Czech Republic in the opening fixture of the European Under-21 Championship at the Eden Stadium in Prague on Wednesday evening, but said that his side showed too many nerves.

Supersub Pione Sisto notched the winner after Jannik Vestergaard pulled the Danes level, in an exciting clash which many hope will set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

“I was not happy with the first half, we were lucky we were not behind with two or three goals,” remarked Thorup to Ekstra Bladet.

“I used some words during the half-time break that I won’t repeat here.

“I do not know if it was because of nerves or because we did not take responsibility, but it was disappointing, we showed many nerves at what was at stake and we did not come across well.”

However, Thorup had positive things to say about the second half, and the substitutions in particular.

“I was very pleased with the substitutions, we know what Sisto can do.”
