UEFA have confirmed that Sampdoria will take part in the 2015/16 Europa League after their presence in the competition had been thrown into doubt in recent days.

After city rivals Genoa were denied a UEFA license, Samp were next in line to play in Europe after finishing in seventh but their presence was thrown into doubt due to the involvement of former player Stefano Guberti in match-fixing while with the Blucerchiati in 2012.

Despite an investigation by UEFA, Europe’s governing body confirmed on Wednesday that Samp will take part in the Europa League next season, while stating that Lazio will feature in the Champions League preliminary stage.

“We are very happy, we were sure of being right and UEFA has confirmed that,” Samp lawyer Antonio Romei told Tuttomercatoweb.

“We had clearly given proper attention to the case and were confident on the success of the judgement.”

President Massimo Ferrero shared his delight as well, stating that the chance to play in Europe is a great opportunity for the club and its fans.

“I want to thank everyone, particularly the lawyers, and I am delighted for the magnificent fans,” the film entrepreneur said in a statement on the club’s official website.

“I would rather have done this on the playing field, but I have always believed in the seriousness and preparation of UEFA and the FIGC.

“We will represent Genoa, Liguria and Italy with fair play and intensity.”
