Walter Zenga has confirmed that he is on the brink of signing a deal to replace Sinisa Mihajlovic in the Sampdoria hot seat.

The Serbian left his role on Monday after potentially guiding the club to Europa League football after Genoa’s clerical error and Zenga has now landed in Genoa as he gets ready to put pen to paper on his contract.

Stopped by reporters at the city’s Cristoforo Colombo airport, he revealed: “I can assure you that it is a great thrill for me to take over as Sampdoria coach. I spent two unforgettable years in Genoa.

“I am taking the place of a good friend in Mihajlovic and it is a good challenge for me. I did not have to think for a moment when I heard Ferrero’s offer. He is a passionate, determined character with great desire and Samp are Samp.

“This is a great challenge and we will all be ready to do well. A message for the fans? I’m back!”

As a player, the former Italy international spent two seasons at the Blucerchiati from 1994 until 1996 and upon his retirement has enjoyed a nomadic coaching career that has brought him from the United States to Turkey and even most recently, the United Arab Emirates.
