Former Padova coach Alessandro Dal Canto has bemoaned Stephan El Shaarawy’s move from AC Milan to Monaco, stating a player of his quality should have continued to develop in Serie A.

Canto was the coach of Padova when El Shaarawy arrived on loan from Genoa in the 2010-11 season, where he put on several impressive displays before becoming the Serie B Player of the Year.

AC Milan then moved to sign the young forward for €10 million and Alexander Merkel.

Canto lamented El Shaarawy leaving AC Milan, adamant that the player deserved and should have continued his evolution in Serie A.

“A player of such quality should remain in Serie A,” Canto told Tuttomercatoweb.

“But everyone makes their own choices and AC Milan will have had their reasons to sell him.

“After a season when he scored 16 goals there wasn’t enough patience; injuries also slowed down his progression, and that was a real shame.

“Monaco can be good for him and make a difference, but I think he could have just as well progressed in another Serie A team.”
