Arsenal could be close to sealing a deal for former Italy goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

The 33-year-old looks set to replace Wojciech Szczesny who is moving on loan to Roma to gain experience, after the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea earlier this summer.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Arsene Wenger is ready to give Amelia the opportunity to play English Premier League football.

It is thought that the Italian will initially serve as backup to Cech and to the Colombian David Ospina.

Arsenal have previously done a deal similar to this in the 2013-14 season when they signed Emiliano Viviano on loan for a season, however he failed to play a competitive game for the Gunners.

Amelia has made nine appearances for the Italian national team but hasn’t appeared for the Azzurri since 2009, hanging up his gloves since.

He previously played for AC Milan before being released in 2014, but returned to football with Perugia in February.
