Attacking talents Simone Zaza, Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic have all been drafted in this summer, thus prompting the Old Lady to focus attention now on defensive reinforcements.

Tuttosport report that Monaco centre-back Aymen Abdennour, who impressed against the Bianconeri in last season’s Champions League quarter-final match, and Schalke defender Matija Nastasic top the list of other targets should a deal for the ex-Roma stopper falter.

Benatia left the Lupi in August 2014 and only started 13 Bundesliga matches for his new club, while making two further substitute appearances in league action.

The former Udinese man turned out on 113 occasions in Serie A during a previous four-year spell in Italian football, prior to his switch to Germany for a fee in the region of €27 million.
