Chievo president Luca Campedelli has revealed that the Flying Donkeys were once close to signing Ivory Coast and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

The 46-year-old, who last year revealed that the Verona based club were once close to landing former Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has now now admitted that he was on the verge of signing Drogba back in 2001 before the deal fell through.

“In 2001 we were really close to Drogba,” he revealed.

“He was almost ours but the deal fell through due to Lazio, as they were going to sign Eriberto and [Christian] Manfredini but then they pulled out.”

Chievo’s interest in the now 37-year-old came about during their first ever season in Serie A, a year in which they surpassed all expectations and almost earned a place in the UEFA Cup.

Drogba meanwhile enjoyed life in France with mid-table Ligue 2 side Le Mans before going on to have a lucrative career with the likes of Marseille, Galatasaray and most famously Chelsea.
