Jordy Clasie has revealed he had been approached by Roma many times before moving to English Premier League side Southampton.
The 24-year-old played against Roma in the Europa League last year with Feyenoord. The Giallorossi defeated their Dutch opponents over the two legs in a tie which was overshadowed after Feyenoord fans vandalised the Piazza di Spagna in Rome.
“Roma were interested in me for a long time, they immediately got in contact with me after playing against them in the Europa League,” Clasie told Voetbal International.
“We spoke on a number of occasions, but things dragged on and nothing came of the talks.”
Clasie represented the Netherlands during the 2014 World Cup featuring twice, once as a substitute in the semi-final and again as a starter in the third place play-off. The midfielder recently transfered, for a fee in the region of €11million, from Feyenoord to Southampton.
