Lazio have opened talks with the representatives of Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho in a bid to thrash out a deal for the 25-year-old.

The Biancocelesti want to strengthen their defence ahead of next month’s crucial Champions League qualifiers and Stefano Pioli’s side believe that the Frenchman is a player who could bolster their chances of qualifying for Europe’s premier competition.

According to Lalaziosiamonoi.it, the capital club are interested in signing the centre-back on an initial season-long loan deal which could subsequently lead to a permanent contract.

However any move for Sakho may be scuppered as Reds coach Brendan Rodgers sees the former Paris Saint-Germain defender as integral to his side’s plans next season and Liverpool value the player at €15 million while the player expects to be handed a contract worth €5m per season.

Sakho, who has made 46 appearances for the Premier League side since his switch from PSG in 2013, has another two years left on his deal at Anfield.
