Louis Van Gaal has refused to be drawn on a move for Sergio Romero despite Manchester United being linked with the goalkeeper.

Romero left Sampdoria at the end of his contract with Roma and United chasing the free agent but Van Gaal would not talk about the Argentinian international.

“I can not talk about Romero.” Van Gaal told reporters at a press conference on Manchester United’s pre season tour of America.

“I can not talk about any aspect of our transfer strategy.

“We can sign another goalkeeper but that all depends on whether [David] De Gea leaves the club.

“At the moment De Gea is training well with the side.”

Roma meanwhile have began talks with Romero’s representatives in order to try and sign the free agent, however, they are not close to agreeing a contract with Romero.

Romero, who played with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar before joining Sampdoria in 2011, has 64 caps for Argentina.
