After an unlikely u-turn saw Philippe Mexes remain at AC Milan for the upcoming season, he insisted it was a great honour for him to be returning to the club.

The Frenchman’s contract expired at the end of June and after a period of uncertainty for him, signed a new one-year contract with the Rossoneri on Saturday.

Speaking after signing the new deal, the former Roma man told Milan Channel: “I am very, very proud to be here again. It is an honour for me to be here. I want to thank the club, the coach and the fans for the support given to me.

“This has given me a renewed desire and has me more determined than ever to bring even more to this shirt. I will always give my maximum and we will be looking to do better than last year.

“For a player at the end of his contract, to see the affection of the fans gives you confidence. You can see that we want to do something good this year,” he concluded.
