The father of former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has slammed the Spanish club, claiming that Casillas was cast away in the president’s pursuit of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The 34-year-old’s stay in Madrid abruptly came to an end after 16 years of service earlier this summer, leading many high-profile names to blast Los Blancos president, Florentino Perez, with the most recent name to step forward being that of Casillas’ father.

“Iker was treated well by Madrid’s former presidents, but [Florentino] Perez has never liked him,” Jose Casillas told Tuttosport.

“In fact he didn’t like him simply because he isn’t tall enough for the president’s liking.

“Instead Perez has always been fixated with the idea of bringing Buffon to Madrid instead.”

Buffon previously turned down Los Merengues’ advances back in 2007, an affair which reportedly led to Casillas threatening to quit the club.
