Roma are struggling to reduce their wage bill in order to create space for new signings with the likes of Ashley Cole and Maicon refusing to have their contracts rescinded and Gervinho rejecting a move to play in Dubai.

Cole, 34, struggled to find consistency in his debut season in Serie A and spent most of his time warming the bench with both Gervinho and Maicon during the latter half of the campaign as the former’s form drastically dropped following his successful African Cup of Nations tournament.

According to Leggo, sporting director Walter Sabatini has already made an effort to terminate the contracts of Cole and Maicon, but both declined to do so and Gervinho turned down a move to Al-Jazira. The trio cost the Giallorossi close to €15million in wages per season, a figure that is hampering their movement in the transfer market.

Both Cole and Maicon failed to make 20 appearances for Roma over the last campaign whereas Gervinho managed just two league goals in what was a difficult year for the Ivory Coast international.
